Superlitio - Tripping Tropicana (2004)

It is impossible not to come away from listening to Columbian buzz band Superlitio’s latest offering, Tripping Tropicana, without feeling happier than when you started. The group combines rock, hip-hop, jazz and heavy Latin influences to create an eclectic sound that is guaranteed to make its listeners want to get off the couch and fire up a conga line. The band has found its voice and uses English, Spanish and French to convey what seems like one seamless 49-minute song, saturated with Latin themes and party influences. By merging bongos, hard-rocking guitars, maracas, a synthesizer and a great horn section, they are able break the mold of normal genre labels and produce a sound that is unique and all their own.
Superlitio is a six-piece band out of Columbia (South America) that definitely knows how to keep things interesting. On their most recent album, Tripping Tropicana (Latin Grammy Nominee for best new artist in ‘04) they show that they are capable of, well, everything. Latin, rock and techno seem to be the most defining styles found, but even that combination is somewhat broad. This has got to be the most interesting stuff I've head in a long time..... .... there's no way you could ever get bored listening to this album. They can jump from electro to rock to salsa to reggae-like beats all in one song. Such variety and contrast within the music, paired with a very modern, electronic (but not to the point where it's overdone) sound makes Tripping Tropicana a very enjoyable album.

Sidestepper - Continental (2006)

Continental es el último disco de Sidestepper, proyecto liderado por Ivan Benavides (Ivan y Lucia, Bloque) y Richard Blair, un productor británico que llegó a Colombia en los noventas para trabajar junto a Totó la Momposina y terminó convertido en uno de los personajes mas influyentes en la música colombiana y uno de sus principales promotores luego de colaborar con gente como Carlos Vives, Andrea Echeverri (Aterciopelados) o Teto Ocampo. Sidestepper hace música electrónica (Drum&Bass y todo eso) basada en ritmos afro-colombianos. Este album presenta, en contraste con los discos anteriores, un sonido más orgánico, con más guitarras, voces y percusión que sonidos de DJ.
